Canals Final stage in completion of the Barkley Canal consisted of removing 8000,000 cubic yards of earth acting as a "plug" seperating Lake Barkley and Kentucky Lake. Reaching nearly two miles, the free-flowing waterway joining the Tennessee and Cumberland rivers is one of the few in America connecting two major rivers and marks the first time in history these two have been linked. The bridge is a key part of the extensive Barkley highway relocation program and serves as the northern gateway to the 170,000-acre recreational area of the Land Between the Lakes.

Canals Completed linking of the two lakes adds an historic finishing touch to the Barkley Project. Barkley Canal shortens the sailing trip from the lower Ohio by 17 miles and opens the Cumberland River to a new era of water commerce. It and Barkley Lock join the Cumberland with the nation's 22,000 miles of navigable waterways, giving access to nine-foot channel depths all the way upstream to Celina, Tennessee, upon completion of the Cordell Hull Project which is now under construction.

Canals Canal boats somewhere along the Chesapeake & Ohio railroad tracks. Possibly old James River and Kanawha Canal. Sold to C&O Rail in 1880. The canal was abandoned and the towpath was used for as railroad.
