Capitol* AFHG-Jan. 17th., 1945 America's Mississippi River. "Father of Waters"--A great commercial highway in war and peace. Down America's Mississippi River puffs this modern steamboat, a descendant of the sternwheel vessels which opened the Mississippi valley to intensive cultivation in the early 1800's, by making possible quick and cheap transportation of farm produce. Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens), the world famous author, lived beside the Mississippi at Hannibal, in the Midwestern state of Missouri. In his well known book "Life on the Mississippi" he describes his own adventures as a river pilot. At the height of the steamboat age, in the 1850's, the annual volume of goods carried on western U.S. rivers was ten million tons. Today huge barge fleets transport every year more than ten times that tonnage of freight, expediting the delivery of essential war materials.
