- Ohio River, New Cumberland. When the Army Engineers' program is completed, 19 locks and dams similar to the one above will transform the Ohio into a series of pools (between dams) averaging 50 miles in length but in some cases extending 95 to 115 miles. This wider, deeper water is expected to benefit not only barge traffic but also thousands of pleasure craft owners who have come to the river in recent years.
