Dams and Locks Construction Cumberland River, Barkley. By November, 1965 the Illinois Central Railroad track had been relocated across the dam and removal of the old bridge was under way at the reservoir began filling. Installation and testing of the hydroelectric generating equipment was progressing on schedule at that time. The lock is now in full operation as temporary gates have been removed.

Dams and Locks Construction Cumberland River, Barkley. With the third stage cofferdam in place and the powerhouse substructure virtually finished, the Cumberland's flow was diverted through four spillway bays, as indicated by this picture taken in December of 1964. Temporary gates in the lock permitted river traffic to use the lock before the reservoir was raised to operating level.

Dams and Locks Construction Cumberland River, Barkley. Barkley's second stage cofferdam protected excavation and foundation work in August 1962, with a giant gentry crane located where the powerhouse structure would be built. The concrete batch plant (left foreground) became the key to a massive operation in placing 420,400 cubic yards of concrete.

Dams and Locks Construction Cumberland River, Barkley. Barkley's land-locked lock had its gates in place by April of 1961, when coffer cells of the first stage cofferdam were being removed. On the bank, the operation structure was almost finished and riprap protection had beeen placed below the lock.
