Delta Queen* "When the Delta Queen sailed for Louisville last night with 250 passengers bound for the Kentucky Derby, a few of them gathered on the head end of the boat to wave farewell to their less fortunate friends. Capt. Tom Greene had a capacity crowd and was compelled to turn away from 250 to 300 persons because of lack of sleeping accommodations. The passengers slept on the Delta Queen last night--that is, maybe some of them did--will witness the big race this afternoon, then board the boat, which will return to Cincinnati tomorrow morning. Tomorrow night the Queen will take on a new passenger list and leave again for New Orleans. The boat crowd was typical of the throngs on their way or preparing to leave for Louisville by plane, train, bus and automobile." Cincinnati Enquirer, May 6, 1950

Delta Queen Twenty-eight year old Lexie Palmore receives piloting instructions from Captain C.S. "Rip" Ware in the pilothouse of the Steamboat Delta Queen. Under the sponsorship of the Delta Queen Steamboat Co., the Tyler, Texas, native is enrolled in a two-year 50/50 program at the National River Academy in Helena, Arkansas. She attends classes at the school for 50 days and then works as a steersman or cub pilot for 50 days aboard the Delta Queen as it plies the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. At the end of the program she will be eleigible to sit for her pilot's license. She will then be able to take the helm of either of the company's sternwheelers--the 50 year old Delta Queen or the new $20 million Mississippi--without supervision. Lexie, who has a Master's Degree in Art, intends to make the river her career and to earn her Master's license.

Delta Queen "Two sister steamboats, the Delta Queen and the Delta King, alike as two peas in a pod were launched and made ready to enter service on the Sacramento River in California in 1926. These two vessels were fabricated in Glasgow, Scotland on the River Clyde inasfar as the steel work was concerned. they were temporarily assembled at the Isherwood Yard, parts marked, then knocked down and shipped by ocean boat to San Francisco and then barged up the Sacramento River to Stockton, California where they were reassembled and the cabin and deck work was completed by American shipbuilders. Building operations took two years being completed in 1926. The machinery was built by Denny's Shop in Dumbarton, Scotland and wheel shafts and cranks were forged by the Krupp plant in Germany. The ships when completed cost about $1 million each. Original owner was the California Transportation Company who used them alternately for overnight service between San Francisco and Sacramento. After Pearl Harbor, the U.S. Navy took over both boats and used them for conveying personnel to and from ocean vessels and ferrying personnel in the inner bay area. At the conclusion of World War II, the two ships were turned over to the U.S. Maritime Commission which advertised them for sale. The late Cap't Tom Greene acting for the Greene Lines of Cincinnati successfully bid $46,250.00 for the Delta Queen. On December 17, 1946, Cap't Tom Greene was officially told to come and get his boat. That is a story you should read and if you can find a copy of Cap't. Frederick Way's 'The Saga of the Delta Queen' you will be rewarded with a fascinating river-sea yarn, tall but entirely true. How did Cap't Way get the Delta Queen from California to the Ohio River? Well, here it is, folks, parked out from in front of the R.R. Tracks and fernix the good ole Ohio River. It's not often such a luxury tourist vessel can park right in front of such a luxury motor hotel. We are both quite honored and return the compliments. The above photo was taken from the Ohio River Bridge, 11:30 AM, Thursday, June 13, 1963, by Round and Round's sharp-eyed camera, naturally and of course!" Marietta Ohio Times June 18, 1963

Delta Queen Captain C.S. "Rip" Ware conducts a tour of his Delta Queen pilothouse during a cruise on the Mississippi River. Tours of the pilothouse are one of the many activities passengers enjoy aboard the two sternwheelers of the Delta Queen Steamboat Co., the 50 year old Delta Queen and the new $20 million Mississippi Queen. Other activities include shore tours, dancing and Dixieland, sing-alongs, old-time vaudeville routines, kite-flying over the paddlewheel, eleven-at-eleven jogs on the Sun Deck, and do-it-yourself calliope playing.

Delta Queen "Apparently reluctant to leave the West Coast for her new home in Cincinnati, the Delta Queen, one of the largest river boats in the world, balked at Antioch, Calif., Saturday, broke her tow line, veered to shore and became stuck in a mudflat. The boat is being towed from California to New Orleans, whence she is to continue on to Cincinnati, where the Green line steamers will put her into operation between Cincinnati and New Orleans. A tug can be seen maneuvering near the large steamship." Unknown newspaper clipping, April 21, 1947.
