The passengers slept on the Delta Queen last night--that is, maybe some of them did--will witness the big race this afternoon, then board the boat, which will return to Cincinnati tomorrow morning. Tomorrow night the Queen will take on a new passenger list and leave again for New Orleans. The boat crowd was typical of the throngs on their way or preparing to leave for Louisville by plane, train, bus and automobile." Cincinnati Enquirer, May 6, 1950

Original owner was the California Transportation Company who used them alternately for overnight service between San Francisco and Sacramento. After Pearl Harbor, the U.S. Navy took over both boats and used them for conveying personnel to and from ocean vessels and ferrying personnel in the inner bay area. At the conclusion of World War II, the two ships were turned over to the U.S. Maritime Commission which advertised them for sale. The late Cap't Tom Greene acting for the Greene Lines of Cincinnati successfully bid $46,250.00 for the Delta Queen. On December 17, 1946, Cap't Tom Greene was officially told to come and get his boat.
That is a story you should read and if you can find a copy of Cap't. Frederick Way's 'The Saga of the Delta Queen' you will be rewarded with a fascinating river-sea yarn, tall but entirely true. How did Cap't Way get the Delta Queen from California to the Ohio River? Well, here it is, folks, parked out from in front of the R.R. Tracks and fernix the good ole Ohio River. It's not often such a luxury tourist vessel can park right in front of such a luxury motor hotel. We are both quite honored and return the compliments. The above photo was taken from the Ohio River Bridge, 11:30 AM, Thursday, June 13, 1963, by Round and Round's sharp-eyed camera, naturally and of course!" Marietta Ohio Times June 18, 1963
