Electric Plants As a result of the Ohio Valley’s great coal deposits and the economical barge transportation offered, the area is one of the biggest producers of electric power in the world. The Clifty Creek plant at Madison, Indiana produces electric power for the Atomic Energy Commission’s gaseous-diffusion plant near Portsmouth, Ohio and annually burns approximately four million tons of coal.
