Loading and Unloading    There are two marine legs for the unloading of barges at the Public Grain Elevator in the Port of New Orleans. Besides this equipment, there are automatic rail car unloaders and the nation’s largest automatic truck dumper. The elevator has received grain by truck from as far as Sykeston, Mo.

Close to the banana plantations of Central America, the port’s banana imports are top in the United States.

First in the nation in the export of U.S. cotton, the Port of New Orleans is paradoxically an import point for foreign cotton. Notice the tracks of the Public Belt Railway, which serves the Port area with over 125 miles of tracks connecting the 8 major trunk lines serving the port.

Loading and Unloading    New Orleans is the first port in the nation in importing jute, hemp, and sisal, raw materials for the manufacture of rope, twine, and burlap products. Here, sisal is being loaded on barges for movement up river. This sisal was a small part of shipments received from Africa and Yucatan, where most sisal comes from. Jute is received from Pakistan and India, and hemp come form the Phillippines.

Loading and Unloading    Burlap from Pakistan. Previously all burlap came from India, but during 1953 Pakistan began to export the commodity, too. New Orleans is first port in the U.S. in burlap imports, and is second in imports of raw bagging materials: jute, hemp and sisal. Several twine, cordage and bagging companies moved to New Orleans during 1952 to take advantage of these imports. New Orleans is the natural port of entry for commodities from the Near East and Far East as the port is closer to the Panama Canal than are Atlantic coast ports.
