Rafts and Rafting Another timber scene at Catlettsburg, about 1985, showing the rafts in the foreground to be oak, walnut and other hardwoods, by their sunken appearance. This type of timber was too heavy to float by itself and had to be buoyed up with poplar logs scattered throughout the raft. Note the long steering oars. This picture was taken at a point about where the highway bridge crosses the river between Catlettsburg and Kenova.
