River Construction Mississippi River Channel Stabilization, Memphis, Tn., approximate river mile 738.5. Dredging of the pilot cut for a new navigation channel along the length of Mud Island (Memphis, Tn.) is in progress by the cutterhead dredge Diesel in the foreground. White areas on both sides of Wolf River are dredge spoil which will raise the land above flood stage. Along the newly cut right bank, grading units of the Memphis District revetment fleet prepare the upper bank for riprap paving, and the subaqueous bank for the placing of articulated concrete revetment. The portion of Mud Island at left of the channel will be removed after the new channel is completed and put into use. The new navigation channel will afford a favorable approach to a new bridge to be constructed and three existing bridges across the Mississippi at Memphis.
